single-hen

Betsy was a beautiful and affectionate hen who lived with her flock in the barn, before Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary moved onto the property. Most people don’t realize that hens, who are descendants of jungle fowl, naturally lay only one egg a month. Humans have selectively bred hens to lay an egg a day. This is very hard on their bodies and most hens develop uterine cancer and other such ailments when they are older. In the egg industry, hens are only kept alive while they produce eggs daily, which is about 18 months. Betsy should have lived a lifespan of 7 years, but she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and had to be euthanized when she was almost 3 years old. Betsy is missed by her sisters. We honor her memory.
